For the dedicated dog owner who loves to pamper their partner, Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations provides natural, healthy, delicious dog treats of both the everyday and special occasional variety. Emmy shared with us some of her knowledge and background getting started.
Why did you start your business?
I started my business in order to make treats that were healthy for my girls. That was at the time that there was so much information out about the ingredients in treats coming into the country from China and the multiple recalls. When my girls and their friends liked my treats, I decided to share them with the community at large.
What is your background? What in your background did you find particularly helpful getting started or in day-to-day operations?
I have been in education for approximately 45 years. I have taught, coached, and served as a principal. I opened my own school in 1998. I have an Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision.
My background has been helpful to starting this business.
What do you think gives you an edge over your competitors?
Being a local business. Selling at the Farmer’s Market provides a personal relationship with other dog owners.
I use human grade ingredients in my treats without chemical additives.
What do you think keeps your customers coming back?
Developing relationships with dogs and their owners; variety of flavors, including grain free treats for dogs with allergies); personal service.
What are you most proud of about your business?
Being able to develop recipes that are healthy and that dogs love.
Any products or services you enjoy or consider special or unique that your customers should check out?
My newest treat is Liver Snax. I use liver from two local farms that have grass fed beef. Baking and dehydrating the liver are the first two steps in preparation of treats.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I love people and their pets–or pets and their people. Dogs are great friends. They need and deserve good treatment and strong relationships. Dogs bring out the humanity in us. They teach us how to communicate and to love unconditionally
